Ashes on the Tide

Ashes on the Tide is a haunting retelling of one of the darkest true stories in Guernsey’s history.
In 1556, Catherine Cauchés and her daughters Guillemine Gilbert and Perotine Massey were burned at the stake for their religious beliefs. Perotine was pregnant, and in the horror of the execution her baby was born into the flames, rescued by a bystander, and then ordered back into the fire.

The song gives a voice to the women and the unnamed child whose lives were consumed by religious persecution and the abuse of authority. Dark, mournful and deliberately uncomfortable, Ashes on the Tide is not folklore. It is a remembrance of four lives taken, and of a chapter of Guernsey history that should never be forgotten.
