At the Top of the Tree

At the Top of the Tree is one of the most personal songs I have written.

It came from the moment I realised that, after losing both of my parents, I had suddenly become the person standing at the top of the family tree.

There was no longer anyone above me to call for advice, reassurance or answers. Instead, the people on the branches below were now looking upward to me, expecting the steadiness and wisdom I had once looked for in those who came before.

The song is about that strange contradiction of grief: being old enough to become the person everyone turns to, while still feeling like a child who wants to pick up the phone and ask, “What should I do?”

At the Top of the Tree is about losing your parents, inheriting the responsibility of remembering the stories, names and traditions they carried, and learning to stand strong for the generations below while quietly missing the branches that once sheltered you.
