The Ballad of Daisy and Jonas

The Ballad of Daisy and Jonas is based on a true family story I uncovered while researching my ancestry.

In the North Cemetery lie two young children from my family, Daisy Cansfield (1891–1893) and Jonas Cansfield (1889–1893), resting in an unmarked grave with no stone to carry their names forward.

They died so young that almost everything they might have become was taken with them: the lives they could have lived, the people they might have loved, and the memories they never had the chance to create.

I wrote this song because I could not shake the thought that two little lives had almost disappeared completely into history.

The Ballad of Daisy and Jonas is my way of giving their names back a voice, and making sure that, even more than a century later, they are remembered.

Dedicated to my great-grand aunt Daisy and great-grand uncle Jonas.

They were here. They mattered. And now their names are sung again.
